Vaccinator training FAQs

I have never been before, how can I get there?

If you are travelling by car there is free parking in the Millennium Point Car park. Please get your ticket validated before you leave.

Will my transport costs be covered?

No, we will not be able to cover your travel expenses.

Is there disabled access?

There is disabled access throughout the building.

Is there anywhere I can store my belongings or lockers?

There is a locker room on the 4th floor of Millennium Point. There is a fridge for packed lunches.

What refreshments are available at Millennium Point?

There is tea, coffee and water available to all. There is also a café, providing food and hot drinks.

Do I need to wear my uniform if I have one?

Please wear a uniform if you have one. If you are using public transport, you will need to wear a coat that covers your uniform to your knees. There are toilets that you can change in.

If I am a healthcare worker external to UHB do I need to wear my uniform?

What should I wear if I am from a none healthcare related profession?

Please wear smart casual clothes.

Do I need to do e-learning? Is it mandatory?

As a registered health care worker e-learning is optional, but advised.

Will the training from my own healthcare organisation be transferable?

Mandatory training from your own organisation is transferrable. Vaccinator training is transferrable as you will be trained against the national protocol which is standardised.

How long will I be expected to work for?

There will be a variety of shifts available. You can stipulate what you would like to work.

How many breaks will I get?

Breaks will be dependent on your shift length, but statutory breaks apply.

Will I get paid for the training?

You will be paid for training.

How much will I get paid for the training?

As a registered health professional you will be paid a Band 5 bank rate.

Who do I need to report to when I get to Millennium point?

You will need to report to the senior nurse, who will be on the ground floor in the atrium.

Will I get PPE when I get to Millennium point?

All PPE will be provided.

What kind of mask should I wear whilst working at Millennium Point?

Surgical face mask and any changes subject to legislation.

Do I need to do lateral flow testing if I will be exposed to the general public?

We will not be providing lateral flow tests, (this is an immediate testing system, that tells you if you have COVID-19 or not) abide by the standard rules regarding Covid symptoms. Do not attend your shift if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Temperature
  • Continuous cough
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste

Is there anyone I can contact beforehand who will be working on site if I have a problem on the day?

How long is my training?

The formal teaching is as you see below, but you will be paid for 7.5 hours. This extension of hours is so that you can begin vaccinating as soon as you have been signed off, and you can continue for a full shift.

Will these skills be recognised in industry after the pandemic?

There will be many transferable skills you will gain from undertaking vaccination training. You will be interacting with the public, sharing public health advice on vaccination and gaining healthcare skills.

How do I book my shifts?

Once you have completed your training we will ask you to let us know your availability for shifts. This will be done electronically.

Can I do this while I am furloughed?

Please check on the GOV.UK website as to whether you can work whilst furloughed.

Do I need to have healthcare experience?

If you are working as an unregistered individual (registered applies to nursing, medicine, physiotherapy etc.) you do not need healthcare experience.

We need you to demonstrate excellent communication skills and be able to interact with the public. We will train you to give the vaccine and provide public health advice to the public.

Will there be support available should I need it?

Each shift there are flow coordinators who you can approach to ask any questions. There is a senior nurse in charge on each floor who can answer specific vaccine questions. There is medical cover for any medical questions or concerns you have about the person you are vaccinating and there is an operational lead who can answer questions about administration staff, the facility etc.

Will I be able to have the vaccine?

Yes, you will be able to access a vaccination for yourself.

Is any medical assistance information available?

  • There is a vaccination medical advice line for all vaccine related queries that is operational at all times during vaccine centre opening hours
  • On the hospital hubs – the medical emergency response will be provided by the hospital siteby calling 2222
  • On the mass vaccination sites – the medical emergency response will be provided by West Midlands Ambulance Service via calling 9-999
  • A registered prescriber will be assigned to each site to enable support for any patient specific directions that may be needed on any site
