A number of cancer trials have been paused during the pandemic.
Trials have continued for patients whose trial treatment is essential.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest regional centres for non-surgical cancer treatment. Links have been established with surrounding cancer units and we accept referrals from across the UK and overseas.
The multidisciplinary Cancer Research Team (CRT) includes fully trained and experienced research nurses, clinical trial coordinators and project assistants. The team works on both academically and commercially sponsored trials in a number of cancer areas. Trials range from observational, which could involve patients completing questionnaires or donating blood/tissue samples, to interventional, which aim to establish new and improved treatments for cancer patients.
The CRT is responsible for recruiting, assessing and managing care pathways of cancer trial participants. Our goal is to support and promote high-quality cancer research and we aim to offer the most advanced, up to date and cutting edge treatments for our cancer patients.

- Breast
- Gynaecological
- Brain
- Sarcoma
- Upper gastrointestinal
- Urology (including renal, bladder, testicular and prostate)
Cancer trials are also supported by other research teams throughout the Trust, that cover:
- melanoma
- skin lymphoma
- neuroendocrine
- neurological cancer
