Hazard alarms

Pump off alarm

The pump off alarm can be identified as follows:

  • Loud constant alarm tone
  • Flashing red heart on the user interface
  • Pump running symbol is black
  • Driveline is connected
  • 'Low flow' and 'call hospital contact' will alternate on the screen

The above is an indication that the pump has stopped, possibly because power has been disconnected or failed. Please ensure the power source is connected.

If connecting to a power source does not resolve the alarm, call an ambulance for urgent medical review and ask someone nearby to contact the on call LVAD coordinator for further instructions.

The alarm can be silenced for two minutes by pressing the 'silence alarm' button or until a new hazard alarm occurs.

Low flow alarm

The alarm for a low flow can be identified as follows:

  • Flashing red heart on the user interface
  • Pump running symbol illuminated
  • 'Call hospital contact' and 'low flow' will alternate on the screen
  • Constant alarm tone will sound

The above indicates that pump flow is less than 2.5lpm.

Call an ambulance for urgent medical review as your heart function may be compromised and ask someone nearby to contact the on call LVAD coordinator for further instructions.

The alarm can be silenced for two minutes by pressing the 'silence alarm' button or until a new hazard alarm occurs.

Driveline disconnected alarm

The driveline disconnected alarm can be identified as follows:

  • Flashing red heart on the user interface
  • Pump running symbol is black
  • Flashing red light near driveline connector
  • Loud constant alarm tone
  • 'Connect driveline' will flash on the screen

The above is an indication that the driveline is disconnected from the system controller.

Immediately reconnect the driveline to the system controller and move the driveline safety lock on the system controller to the locked position. It may take up to ten seconds for the pump to start.

Please check that the modular inline connector is secure. If the alarm persists after reconnecting the driveline, seek assistance from someone who is nearby as soon as possible and ask them to call an ambulance as your heart function may be compromised.

If the driveline is connected and the alarm persists, replace the system controller with a programmed backup system controller only under the instruction of an LVAD coordinator.

The alarm can be silenced for two minutes by pressing the 'silence alarm' button or until a new hazard alarm occurs.

System controller hardware fault alarm

The alarm for a system controller hardware fault can be identified as follows:

  • All symbols are off, including the 'pump running' and 'wrench' symbols
  • 'Call hospital contact controller fault' will display on the screen
  • Constant alarm tone will sound
  • All controller buttons will be non-functional
  • Check the driveline and power are connected

The above indicates a serious internal malfunction has occurred in the system controller that requires diagnosis and resolution.

Call an ambulance immediately and ask someone nearby to contact the LVAD coordinator for further instructions.

The alarm tone cannot be silenced.
