About us

The Critical Care team work across 4 critical care units which are specialist surgery, trauma, neurosciences and cardiothoracic surgery.  

Occupational Therapy in critical care provide specialist and holistic assessments and interventions for patients that are critically unwell. Occupational therapists provide physical and cognitive rehabilitation and consider the psychological, social and environmental impacts of a critical illness and the impact on day-to-day life.

Conditions we treat

• Heart, lung, liver transplants  
• Traumatic brain injuries 
• Acquired brain injuries 
• Neurological conditions such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease 
• Spinal cord injuries 
• Polytraumas 
• Amputations 
• Brain/spinal tumours 
• Delirium  
• Critical illness acquired weakness, neuropathy, myopathy  
• Post surgical complications  

What to expect

We are a dedicated and compassionate team with a specialist skill set to complete assessments and provide holistic care and interventions, working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).  

Our interventions may include: 

• Complex seating and wheelchair provision  
• Upper limb assessments and rehabilitation plans  
• Splinting  
• Functional assessments and engagement in activities of daily living  
• Environmental stimulation and delirium management  
• Cognitive assessments  
• Goal setting

How to be referred

We screen all units on critical care but also receive referrals from the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
