About us

The Healthcare of Older People Team (HCOP) covers 7 wards across the Heritage Building to provide excellent quality care to our patients. The patient population is largely over age 65. We work together with Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapy, Dietetics, as well as the complex discharge team to assess, treat and discharge plan for our patients in a safe and timely manner.

Conditions we treat

We see a range of different medical conditions on HCOP, however the most common conditions we come across are: 

• Dementia 
• Parkinsons  
• Delirium  
• Traumatic Brain Injuries 
• Frailty  
• Stroke  

What to expect

We are a dedicated and caring team, specialising in the care of the elderly. We work together as a multi-disciplinary team to ensure our patients receive the highest quality care whilst they are in hospital.  

Some of our wards have regular groups which run weekly including exercise groups to maintain and improve patients’ function and mobility, as well as social groups such as ‘knit and natter”, to combat issues such as social isolation and disorientation in hospital.

During the discharge planning process, the occupational therapist may ask you to complete some functional assessments to gain a better understanding of the support you may require at home. This would include things such as washing and dressing assessments and kitchen assessments.

Who we work with

We work with all members of the Multidisciplinary Team including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and dieticians. 

In order to ensure our patients are discharged safely, with the appropriate support, we liaise with social workers, Vulnerabilities Team, Safeguarding, West Midlands Fire Service.  

How to be referred

All wards are screened by the ward occupational therapist and patients are prioritised according to their needs/medical status. The ward/Multidisciplinary Team can also refer patients to the occupational therapy service if required.
