About us
The Medicine Team is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), working across the Medical, Respiratory and Infectious Diseases wards of the hospital, currently based on the fifth floor.
Conditions we treat
Occupational Therapy in the Medicine Team provides assessment and interventions for those with a wide range of medical conditions. These can include COPD, Lung Cancer, Diabetes, Infectious Diseases (e.g. TB), sepsis, frailty and falls.
What to expect
- Initial assessment of a patient, including obtaining a comprehensive social history
- Functional assessments (washing and dressing assessments, kitchen assessments)
- Cognitive assessments
- Community visit (as required)
- Assessment and provision of equipment
- Specialist seating and complex rehabilitation, working closely alongside specialist teams (e.g. the Specialist Rehab Service, Supportive and Palliative Care, Complex Discharge)
Who we work with
We work closely with patients, their families and friends and multidisciplinary team (MDT). This can include the Medical Team, nursing staff, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Complex Discharge Nurses, Palliative Care Nurses, Specialist Rehab Services. We also work alongside our community colleagues, including equipment services, Social Services and community Therapy teams.
How to be referred
All wards are screened by the ward occupational therapist and patients are prioritised according to their needs/medical status. The ward/Multidisciplinary Team can also refer patients to the occupational therapy service if required.
