Speech and Language Therapy

The Speech and Language Therapy team based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) provides services to adult (16 years +) inpatients and outpatients with a variety of acquired conditions. We provide many specialist services including:

  • Management of:
    • Swallowing difficulties
    • Acquired speech difficulties (such as Dysarthria)
    • Acquired language disorders (such as Aphasia)
    • Stammering/Dysfluency
    • Voice disorders
  • Support for people with a Laryngectomy including Surgical Voice Restoration (SVR)/Voice Prosthesis
  • Assessment and management of Tracheostomy in relation to voice, communication, and swallowing
  • Instrumental swallowing assessments including Fibre-endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Videofluoroscopy (Video X-ray of swallowing)
  • Speech and language assessments for patients undergoing an awake Craniotomy for a brain tumour
  • Supporting specialist clinics such as voice clinic, professional voice users, Radiotherapy, Cystinosis and Lung Transplant

The QEHB SLT team do not provide a community/domiciliary service, this is provided by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust.
